New Zealand’s vineyards are mainly on the coast, where the milder climate is best suited to the cultivation of grapes. For many years both North and South Island vineyards have been producing quality wines for international export.
The main wines produced in New Zealand are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc in addition to sparkling wines and some aromatic varieties.
From north to south New Zealand’s wine regions are Northland, Auckland, Waikato Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, Central Otago. Over 15,000 hectares are planted at present.
Among the many new Zealand wine producers are Clifford Bay Estate, Cloudy bay, Coopers Creek, Montana Wines, Okahu estate, Torlesse Wines and Waipara Springs Winery.
