Wine had been produced in the Iberian Peninsula since time immemorial. Twenty years ago, the market was flooded with cheap Spanish wines which did little for the reputation of that country. But Spain produces many quality wines which vie with those of France, California and new Zealand.
Most Spanish wine is produced from local grapes. These include Bobal, Garnacha, Malvasia, Moscatel, Palomino, Pedro Ximenez and Tempranillo. Perhaps the best known wine of Spain is Sherry, a fortified wine from Jerez. Many of the Cavas and Rioja are produced in the north of the country.
The main wine regions in Spain are Jerez, Penedés, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Rueda and Valdepeñas.
Spanish wine producers include Alvaro Palacios, Emilio Lustau, Juvé y Camps, Pedro Domecq, González Byass (Tio Pepe), Raimat, Viñátigo and Viñedos y Crianzos del Alto Aragón.
